NASA provides access to AI LLM models (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini) via the NASA Mission Cloud (NMC) AI Hub. The Air Traffic Management and Safety (ATMS) Strategic Harmonization for Integrated Flow and Trajectories (SHIFT) team has been using AI development tools (Claude Code and Gemini command line interface (CLI)) to plan, design, and implement new functionality, analyze existing logic, improve test coverage, and so on. In this ‘tutorial’, I will explain how to get started with NMC AI and will demonstrate the use of Claude Code via round trip project development (app creation, reverse engineering, requirements, design, and planning) starting from a single data file.

Mohamad Refai brings extensive UAS software engineering experience with NASA following 25 years of experience as a contractor supporting a variety of projects. He developed software for several NASA simulation systems, including Java Architecture for Detect and Avoid Extensibility Modeling System (JADEM), Center TRACON Automation System (CTAS), Future Air Traffic Management Concepts Evaluation Tool (FACET), Airspace Concepts Evaluation System (ACES), NAS Digital Twin, and the Digital Information Platform.
